Champasak & Wat Phu

Champasak and Si Phan Don

Champasak is a small town in Southern Laos and is close to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Wat Phu which is one of the highlights of any visit to Laos.

The original site of Wat Phu predates the temples in the Angkor complex and in its heyday it played a significant part in the Khmer Empire. The present complex was built in the 11th to 13th centuries and sweeps up the slopes of Mount Phou Kao with spectacular views from the top.

Wat Phu is an active temple and the three day Wat Phu festival is held at the end of January or the beginning of February - depending on the full moon.
