Houay Xai is the capital of Bokeo Province and is sometimes known as Bokeo. The town is a popular crossing point from Chiang Khong in Thailand - all crossings used to be by ferry, but several years ago a Friendship Bridge was built across the River Mekong.
Originally part of the Golden Triangle and opium trade, the town now relies on tourism.
Most people visit Houay Xai to board the slow boat to Luang Prabang - a two day journey which can be done in varying levels of luxury.
There are opportunities for trekking in the mountainous areas of Bokeo Province.
