Chiang Mai is a former capital of the kingdom of Lan Na, from the 13th century until the mid 18th century. It was also known as the Kingdom of Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai is now a busy city with a thriving tourist industry, and many sights and activities - a few details below.
There are very many temples in Chiang Mai and only the most dedicated temple devotee would visit every single one! A few of the more popular and important ones are shown below.
Wat Chedi Luang is one of the two top temples, with Wat Phra Singh, in Chiang Mai. Built from the 14th to 15th centuries it was the main temple for the Lan Na kings.
The chedi is now a fraction of its original height and the remains show just how magnificent the original chedi must have been.
Wat Phra Sing is one of the two top temples, with Wat Chedi Luang, in Chiang Mai. Also dating from the 14th century, the temple contains a very important Buddha image.
Wat Pan Tao is the writer's favourite temple in Chiang Mai. This temple also dates from the 14th century but the splendid teak viharn was built in the 19th century. It is located next to Wat Chedi Luang.
Wat Phra Doi Suthep is 15 km from the centre of Chiang Mai along good but steep and winding roads - only for the most determined pedal cyclist!
The temple was built in the 13th century and lies just below the summit of Doi Suthep, with spectacular views from the temple.
A visit to the temple can be combined withe a visit to the nearby Bhubing Palace - the royal winter residence in Chiang Mai.
Way Lok Molee is well worth a visit - just north of the moat surrounding the old city.
Bubhing Palace is the royal winter residence in Chiang Mai where the Royal family stay when visiting northern Thailand.
The gardens are open to the public and are well worth visiting.
Appropriate dress should be worn as for temples.
Chiang Mai zoo is the largest zoo in Thailand.
There is a large variety of animals and birds - both indigenous to Asia and from further afield, and also an aquarium (with an extra entry fee).
The park also has gokarting, ziplining, a water park and a snowdrome.

Chiang Rai is also a former capital city of the Lan Na region, founded by King Mengrai in the 13th century before moving his capital to Chiang Mai.
This is the region of the Golden Triangle, a former opium growing area. There are museums in the area telling of the Golden Triangle days, but now the agriculture is of a conventional kind.
As in Chiang Mai, there are several temples and of special note is the Jade Buddha in Wat Phra Kaew, a replica (nearly) of the Emerald Buddha, now situated in Bangkok in a temple of the same name in the Grand Palace complex.
