Luang Prabang to Nong Khiaw and the remote riverside village, Muang Ngoi
with an English speaking driver
Nong Khiaw is an attractive small town 140 kilometres North East of Luang Prabang.
You can relax during the scenic journey from Luang Prabang to Nong Khiaw passing along the banks of the Nam Ou river in your private minivan. At your request your driver will stop for photographs, visits to local villages with your guide at hand to explain the local culture and customs, or simply to have a picnic while enjoying the spectacular views - with a tailor made tour the choice is yours.
The trip with MinivanLuangPrabang's minivan tour service from Luang Prabang to Nong Khiaw is along good roads takes about 3 hours, not allowing for stops.
Nong Khiaw lies on both sides of the Nam Ou, and it is difficult to imagine a more magnificent setting than standing on the bridge connecting the two halves of the town.
The town offers good food and an increasing number of respectable hotels and guest houses. Many of the restaurants and guest houses are situated on the river banks and also have similar spectacular views of the river and surrounding mountains.
The Pha Daeng peak, gives a commanding 360 degree panoramic view of the town, river and mountains. A must for your custom built tour - the average fit person can do the climb in about one and a half hours with a shorter return journey.
The journey from Luang Prabang to Nong Khiaw typically takes about 4 hours with breaks in our minivan.

The Tham Phatok caves are set in a limestone cliff due south of the town, where many of the local people and the Pathet Lao took shelter to avoid the American bombing during the war between America and Vietnam.
The first and larger cave is about 30 metres above ground and is accessible over a log bridge, with the second and smaller cave about 300 metres round the side of the cliff - not for the claustrophobic members of your group!
Muang Ngoi is 20 kilometres by boat from Nong Khiaw; the boat trip takes an hour or more depending on the flow of the river. The boat times do not allow for a day trip and your group tour will need to spend one or more nights in Muang Ngoi.
River journey to Muang Ngoi
The boat trip is an experience not to be missed and the remote village of Muang Ngoi, with easy walking nearby, will give you a taste of traditional Laos villages. Until recently Muang Ngoi was accessible only by boat with no electricity and - horrors - no internet!
Modernisation is happening slowly - a new road and electricity, but the internet can be patchy. It is still not possible for your group tour to travel from Nong Khiaw to Muang Ngoi by minivan.
