There is so much to do and see in Luang Prabang City that a single day does not do it justice.
Start the day at 5-40 a.m. by giving sticky rice to the monks and novices in the Sai Bat alms procession.
The on to the colourful morning market - the oldest market in Luang Prabang - selling fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, rice and other commodities.
After breakfast, your tour will take you round the World Heritage Temples and other sites in Luang Prabang - stop for a coffee break and take in the city life.
Enjoy lunch overlooking the river Mekong and then travel to the Kuangsi Waterfalls - a thirty minute journey - stop at the buffalo farm for buffalo ice cream and at a traditional Hmong village .The falls are spectacular at any time, but particularly so during the wet season. Climb up next to the falling water right to the top, on a well maintained path.
You can swim at the base of the falls in the shaded shallow pools which are popular with families.
Near the falls is a bear rescue centre, where rescued bears live free from the dangers of poachers and hunters.
The Buffalo Farm has been established to encourage good husbandry of animals with the local farmers and the consumption of buffalo milk to improve nutrition of the local people. Other animals are kept on the farm to develop the best ways of rearing and caring for them. Group tours in Luang Prabang are welcomed and given every opportunity to see farming in action and to participate.
You can try milking a buffalo - not as easy as it looks!

Return to Luang Prabang and climb Mount Phou Si to see the sunset before dinner. After dinner visit the night market.
Arrive in Xiengkhuang in time to visit the mystical Plain of Jars, site 1.
There are more than 2000 megalithic stone jars used in burials from about 500 BCE until 500 CE - maybe later. The many sites cover a larger area of central Laos, and several cannot be visited because of unexploded ordnance. The sites we visit are very safe!
Dinner and overnight in your hotel.
You will have the whole day to explore sites 2 and 3 in this fascinating area, and to visit the local villages and whiskey stills - you will find whiskey stills everywhere!
The jars are tubular and of varying designs. Their heights vary from 1 to 3 metres and are connected with burial rites from the Iron Age.
Travel to Nam Nern stopping at the Hot Springs and Tham Piu Cave and visiting Lao tribal villages. Years ago the area was populated by tigers which have long since disappeared. The river Nam Khan continues from Muang Hiem to Luang Prabang and beyond.
The hot springs are in the Nam Et-Phou Louey National Protected Area about ten minutes walk from the main road. The springs are among the hottest natural springs in Laos - you can boil an egg in the hot waters!
Tham Piu Cave served as shelter from the bombing campaigns of the Vietnam war - although Laos was not officially at war. Tham Piu i
Today we travel to Nong Khiaw stopping at points of interest en route, and arriving in time to see the town and climb (30 minutes) to the viewpoint overlooking the town.
An upriver boat trip will take you to the Mok Waterfall - a one hour trek through rice paddy fields and the Laos countryside, with an uphill climb to the Mok Waterfall. Only moderate fitness is needed - the writer of this article completed the trek at the age of 77 and survived! - and thoroughly enjoyed it. On the return journey stop in a cafe in the middle of nowhere for refreshments, before returning to the boat to continue to Muang Ngoi.
On arriving at Muang Ngoi take lunch in a local restaurant before looking round the town. Then return to Nong Khiaw for dinner and overnight.
We will stop at the renowned Pak Ou Caves and Sang Hai village on our return journey to Luang Prabang. Pak Ou means ‘mouth of the Ou river’.
These limestone caves have been a place of worship for over one thousand years and contain thousands of Buddha images in two caves - the lower cave is called Tham Ting and the upper cave Tham Theung.
The lower cave is well lit, but you will need a torch to visit the upper cave.
