Enjoy a scenic journey with Minivan Luang Prabang's minivan tour service from Luang Prabang to Oudomxay - journey of around six hours. A shorter journey will then take you to Luang Nam Tha.
The name of the city is spelled in many ways - Oudomxay, Oudomxai, Udomxay and Udomxai, and it is also know as Muang Xai.
From Oudomxay you can easily travel to the picturesque village of Muang La, 27 km north east, and Chom Ong Cave (seldom visited), 44 km west, as well as enjoying a relaxing break at Nam Kat Yorla Pa Resort; the more energetic can trek to see tribal villages, predominantly Khmu, amidst spectacular views.
There is not a lot to be said for the city itself apart from Wat Phu Tat, an easy climb to a peaceful spot on top of a hill. Wat Phu Tat has the biggest stupa in Oudomxay and a large standing Buddha. From the temple you will have a splendid view over the city of Oudomxay and the distant mountains.
The main attraction in visiting Oudomxay lies in visiting the surrounding areas of outstanding natural beauty.
The city is also noted for its diverse range of handicrafts made by the many local people living around Oudomxay.
A New Year festival is held in early January when many people dress in their traditional dress.

Nam Kat Yorla Pa is 17 km north east of Oudomxay, in a forested area featuring the Nam Kat waterfall. The resort offers high quality accommodation and many activities including trekking, ziplining, ATV riding, climbing, abseiling and camping..
Namkat waterfall is two and a half hours steady walking from the resort - I know because I did it, and it was well worth the effort.
Most people combine a visit to the waterfall with one or more of the many activities on offer - for example, a ride to the start of a short trek, followed by several sky bridges to reach the waterfall, and then return on nine zip lines to meet the waiting car for a return to the resort.
The scenery en route to the waterfall is eye-catching and worthy of a second (or third) look.
Muang La lies 27 km north east of Oudomxay by the Nam Pak river, surrounded by peaceful farmland, with Khmu villages in the mountains. The area also has natural hot springs to refresh your body and give you a sense of well being.
